See this is why I dislike presidential hopefuls campaigning years before the election: because then AP and other news agencies and networks go crazy, making news out of a seemingly silly event, like Fred Thompson's recent trip to a SC gun show.
Apparently, according to AP (via a Columbia, SC TV station) Thompson was trying to set the record straight on his opinion toward gun rights. I guess Romney and Guiliani got it wrong? I'm not quite sure on the details, because frankly, I don't care.
If Thompson likes to go to gun shows and thinks it's "paradise," then that's fine. I'm not going to switch my vote because of it.
and oh wait--it was Thompson's SECOND time at a gun show since saying he will be campaigning for President. Now that's really newsworthy (*cough not really cough*)
In addition to thinking that spending the day at the gun show was a "day in paradise," Thompson wished he could go back and spend more money.
Well, at least wants to put money into the economy. Although I'm not sure if the guns sold at this gun show were used, 'cause if they were, they don't matter in the GDP, and therefore not included in economic numbers.
My favorite quote from the AP story (via CNN.com) : "He reached out and picked up an old M-1 Garand rifle and raised an over-and-under Winchester shotgun suitable for the skeet shooting he's been known to do as he made his way through the 200 vendors at The Land of the Sky Gun Show at a fairgrounds just outside of North Charleston, S.C."
Really? Seriously? Was it a slow political news day today? Or am I just too not into guns and politics to know that this sentence is relevant to voters? Does it say anything about his political views except that he supports gun control?
Be that as it may, I'm not voting for him because not only did he pick up at least 2 guns, but he enjoys gun shows. Now if I was a hunter or gun afficianado, I probably would care. But even still, I wouldn't change my vote based on that one factor.
But I guess some attendees of the gun show did change their minds and want to vote for Thompson because he supports guns. Hmm.
Interesting note: some of the comments on the CNN.com AP news story share my opinion on the sillyness of the story. Although some get very angry and really into the whole gun control debate. It sadly reminds me of the Oklahoma City Bomber Timothy McVeigh who was a gun fanatic..attending gun shows under an alias and fervently practicing his target skills. Anyhoo...
a silly story for the AP. And silly that something like a Presidential hopeful saying that a gun show was like "a day in paradise" is newsworthy. Or even that he went to a gun show. for the 2nd time after announcing his candidacy. silly.
