I haven't given much space to Fred Thompson, and since he was the second story today on Fark.com's political page, I figured I'd start now.
I guess Republicans--and Democrats, for that matter--are wondering whether or not Thompson can handle the political campaign.
After all, he's one of the older Presidential hopefuls, he came into the race late, coerced into the arena, and he doesn't have that many new ideas for America.
The New York Observer starts off their Thompson profile by characterizing him as the famous lawyer on "Law and Order," and how when he threw his hat into the political ring, Americans thought they'd be getting a clear, concise, and precise communicator.
Americans don't seem to get that Fred Thompson is an actor--the character he played on "Law and Order" was just that: a character. Granted, he did a very good job in portraying a hard-lined communicator, but I'm not so sure I'd want a character in the White House.
I'd want Fred Thompson. Not "Law and Order" Fred Thompson.
Thompson's poll numbers are falling--now only 15% of the nation approve of him, well behind Guliani at 33%, according to the NBC News and Wall Street Journal's latest poll.
Two months ago, he had 26 percent of the popular vote.
It seems as though the strong character he played on "Law and Order" does not transcend to the former Senator turned Presidential hopeful.
Perhaps his peopled hyped him up too much, so that when he actually made it to the Republican debates, Thompson wasn't saying anything that American Republicans hadn't heard--he was just adding one more voice to the already confusing and noisy ruckus of all the Presidential candidates, Republican and Democrat.
For his sake, I hope that he pulls himself together and if he doesn't get the Republican nomination, at least he can say: "I didn't make a fool of myself..."
Personally, I want him back on "Law and Order." The show just isn't the same without him....
